What in practice this will mean, in the short-term, I can’t predict, but the standard GOP trope of giving lip service to repealing Roe v. Wade during the campaign, getting elected with the conservative Christian vote and then promptly doing nothing about it—a time-honored tradition dating back to the Reagan years—has been played out. These people want action and they want it now.

I’ve talked about this with conservative leaning libertarians before. What’s going on with the Republican Party is a bit of a case of lunatics taking over the asylum. Abortion has remained legal under total and complete conservative Republican rule, a factor that must irk the serious social conservative.

There do seem to be more promiennt Republicans out there who oppose abortion in all cases. I am somewhat sympathetic to the pro life view but I do not like the idea at all of telling a rape victim that she msut carry her raptist’s baby. CAn’t imagine the stress that msut have with it. And then politicans like Palin make it worse by throwing out cheesy lines.

Don’t be surprised if they get their way. The economic conservatives only want lower taxes and less regulation. They don’t care a hill of beans about social conservative issues. They will still be able to get abortions for their mistresses, porn, drugs, underage sex, whatever. Just like their great-grandfathers could get all the booze they wanted during Prohibition.
